5 Things to Look for When Purchasing a Portable Power Station

Do you need a portable power station? Here are five things to look for when purchasing one. Because of advancements in battery technology, portable power stations now have the capacity and raw power to reliably power electronics that require far more power than a standard power bank can provide. Although they are not as powerful as gas-powered generators, they are quieter, lighter, and do not require fuel to begin producing power.

If you want a quiet and mobile device to power your smartphone, laptop, computer, or TV, a portable power station is likely the better option. Here are five things to look for when purchasing a new power station to help you find a good one.

1. Capacity of the battery

When shopping for a portable power station, the most important feature to consider is battery capacity. The greater the battery capacity, the longer you can use your devices on a single charge. In general, buy the largest capacity battery you can afford.

However, when considering the battery capacity of your portable power station, you may want to take a more calculated approach, taking into account size, weight, and cost.

Knowing battery capacity can be difficult because different manufacturers use different metrics to measure the battery capacity of their portable power stations. The most commonly used metrics for measuring battery capacity are mAh (milliamp hour), Ah (Amp hour), Wh (Watt hour), and kWh (kilowatt-hour).

The maximum power consumption of electronic devices is typically indicated in Watt-hours, which can be found marked on various types of power supplies. If the power supply specifies its power rating in watts, keep in mind that one watt equals one watt-hour.

2. Battery Innovation

Another feature to look for in a portable power station is battery technology or the type of battery it uses. The type of battery used in a portable power station heavily influences its size, weight, cost, charging speed, and how long it can produce AC power before shutting down.

The most common batteries used in portable power stations are lithium-ion (Li-Ion), lithium-polymer (Li-Po), and lead-acid.

Lithium-ion batteries charge three times faster than lead-acid batteries and contain the most energy. Lithium-polymer batteries, on the other hand, are less energy dense than Li-Ion batteries but have faster charging capabilities and are generally safer to use than Li-Ion and lead acid batteries. While lead-acid batteries are the least expensive of the three, they are also the bulkiest, slow to charge, and have the lowest energy density.

A Li-ion battery is usually worth the investment if you want something packable, lighter, and that can be used frequently. On the other hand, a Li-Po battery power station might be a better option if you want something safer, faster charging, and with the lowest passive discharge rate.

Lead-acid batteries aren't usually recommended, but if you need a low-cost set-and-forget backup power station for emergencies, a lead-acid power station should suffice.

3. Inverter Technology

Depending on the device you're attempting to power, having the right inverter in your portable power station can protect your delicate devices from damage while also allowing them to work as efficiently as possible, thereby saving battery charge.

Power inverters are electrical components that convert the direct current (DC) from your battery to alternating current (AC) (AC). DC is used to charge battery-powered handheld devices like your phone, tablet, and Bluetooth earbuds, whereas AC is used to power more power-hungry devices like your laptop, computer, television, and gaming consoles.

Power inverters are classified into two types: pure sine wave inverters and modified sine wave inverters. Modified sine wave inverters use pulse width modulation (PWM), which creates an electronic signal that attempts to resemble a pure sine wave signal, whereas pure sine wave inverters produce clean sine waves that produce AC.

It should be your only option to use a pure sine wave inverter to power sensitive, precise, and delicate equipment. But if you only want to use the power source to run your computer, displays, console, and TV, a power source with a modified sine wave inverter should be perfect and cost-effective.

4. Peak and Continuous Wattage

While purchasing a portable power station, you should also pay attention to the peak and continuous wattage characteristics. But, they can also power appliances like refrigerators, corded power tools, electric fans, and culinary appliances like blenders and food processors. Portable power stations are typically used to power computers, TVs, and other electronic devices. These gadgets must have sufficient peak and continuous wattage to be powered by a portable power station, though.

To jump-start and turn on the majority of power-hungry gadgets and equipment, they require a particular amount of peak or surge wattage. When activated, they will require continuous watts, also known as rated watts, which is a reduced but constant supply of electricity.

5. Power Input and Output Ports

You can never have enough ports for powering and charging your devices when it comes to portable power sources. This is especially true for DC charging ports because you can always add more AC outlets by using an extension cord. We advise purchasing a portable power station with at least two AC outlets, several USB and USB-C charging ports for your mobile devices, a 12-V charging port for your internet router, and more.
